And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? | When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard Him were astonished. "Where did this man get all this?" they asked. "What wisdom has been given to Him? How are such miracles done by His hands?"
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. | "Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Juda, and Simon? Are not his sisters here with us?" They were offended at Him.
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. | Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in His own hometown, among His own relatives, and in His own house."
And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. | He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. | If any place refuses to receive You or listen to You, shake off the dust from Your feet when You leave, as a testimony against them. Truly I tell You, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. | She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" Her mother said, "The head of John the Baptist."
And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. | She came back in at once to the king and asked, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. | The king was deeply sorry, but because of his oath and his guests he did not want to refuse her.

So many people were coming and going that they did not even have time to eat. |
And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. | They went away by boat to a solitary place by themselves.
And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. | But many people saw them leaving and recognized them. They ran on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.
And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. | When Jesus landed and saw the large crowd, He had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. | 36 | Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. | "Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? | He answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to Him, "Should we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give it to them to eat?"
He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. | He said, "How many loaves do You have? Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five — and two fish."
And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. | He directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. | They sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. | Taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves and gave them to His disciples to set before the people. He divided the two fish among them all.

And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. | He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn He came to them, walking on the sea. He was about to pass by them.
But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: | When they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought He was a ghost and cried out.
For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. | They all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke to them and said, "Take courage. It is I. Don't be afraid."
And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. | He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely astonished.
For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. | They had not understood about the loaves. Their hearts were hardened.

And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. | Wherever He went — into villages, towns, or countryside — they laid the sick in the marketplaces. They begged Him to let them touch even the edge of His garment. All who touched it were healed.
