And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. They crossed to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gadarenes.
And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,As Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came from the tombs to meet Him.
Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:This man lived among the tombs. No one could bind him anymore, not even with chains.
Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.He had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he tore the chains apart and broke the shackles in pieces. No one was strong enough to tame him.
And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.Night and day he wandered among the tombs and in the hills, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,When He saw Jesus from a distance, He ran and worshiped Him.
And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.He cried out in a loud voice, "What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name, I beg You — don't torment me!"
For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. For Jesus had said to Him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit."
And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.Jesus asked Him, "What is Your name?" He answered, "My name is Legion, for we are many."
And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. He begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of the region.
Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.A large herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside nearby.
And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. The demons begged Him, "Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them."
And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd — about two thousand — rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned.
And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. Those who tended the pigs fled and spread the news in the town and countryside. People came out to see what had happened.
And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, dressed and in His right mind. They were afraid.
And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. Those who had seen it described what had happened to the man who had been demon-possessed, and also about the pigs.
And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their region.
And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to go with him.
Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. But Jesus would not allow it. He said to Him, "Go home to Your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for You and how He had compassion on You."
And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel. The man went away and began to tell in Decapolis how much Jesus had done for Him. Everyone was amazed.
And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea. When Jesus had crossed back by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him while He was by the sea.
And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,One of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus, came. When He saw Jesus, He fell at His feet
And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.and pleaded with Him greatly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay Your hands on her so she may be healed and live."
And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.Jesus went with Him. A large crowd followed and pressed around Him.
And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,A woman who had suffered a blood discharge for twelve years
And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, had suffered greatly under many doctors. She had spent all she had, and instead of getting better she grew worse.
When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.
For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. For she said, "If I touch even His clothes, I will be healed."
And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. At once the flow of her blood stopped. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?Jesus immediately knew that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched My clothes?"
And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing around You, and yet You ask, 'Who touched Me?'"
And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. He kept looking around to see who had done it.
But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. The woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling. She fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be free from your affliction."
While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? While He was still speaking, some people came from the ruler of the synagogue's house and said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Master any further?"
As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.Jesus overheard what they said. He told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid. Just believe."
And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw the commotion — people weeping and wailing loudly.
And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping."
And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. They laughed at Him. But He put them all out. He took the child's father and mother and those who were with Him, and went in where the child was lying.
And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cumi," which means, "Little girl, I say to You, arise."
And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. The girl got up at once and began to walk around. She was twelve years old. They were completely astonished.
And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
