Psalms 59

The psalmist pleads for deliverance from enemies who surround his house like snarling dogs. Though they lie in wait with no cause, he trusts that God will scatter them and let all Israel know that God rules in Jacob to the ends of the earth. He will sing of God's strength and mercy every morning.

1	Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.	Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me.
2	Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.	Deliver me from evildoers and save me from those who are after my blood.
3	For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.	See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, LORD.
4	They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.	I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight!

6	They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.	They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.
7	Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?	See what they spew from their mouths — the words from their lips are sharp as swords. They think, "Who can hear us?"
8	But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.	But You laugh at them, LORD; You scoff at all those nations.
9	Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence.	You are my strength, I watch for You; You, God, are my fortress,
10	The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.	my God on whom I can rely. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11	Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.	But do not kill them, Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In Your might uproot and bring them down.
12	For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.	For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter,
13	Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.	consume them in your wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob.
14	And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.	They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.
15	Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.	They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied.
16	But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.	But I will sing of your power; yes, I will sing aloud of your mercy in the morning, for you have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble.
17	Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.	To You, O my strength, will I sing; for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy.
