Luke 9

Jesus sends the twelve apostles out to preach and heal, then feeds five thousand men with five loaves and two fish. Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ, and Jesus foretells His death and resurrection. Jesus is transfigured on a mountain before Peter, James, and John.

13	But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.	But He said to them, "You give them something to eat." They said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish — unless we go and buy food for all this people."
14	For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.	There were about five thousand men. He said to His disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty."

20	He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.	He said to them, "But who do You say that I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God."
21	And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;	He strictly charged them and commanded them to tell this to no one,

25	For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?	What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits Himself?
26	For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.	Whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
27	But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.	But truly I tell You, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."
28	And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.	About eight days after saying these things, He took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.

Let us make three shelters — one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah" — not knowing what he was saying.
34	While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.	While He was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
35	And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.	A voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son — hear Him!"
36	And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.	When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
37	And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.	On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him.
38	And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.	A man in the crowd cried out, "Master, I beg you, look on my son, for He is my only child.
39	And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.	A spirit seizes Him and He suddenly cries out. It throws Him into convulsions and He foams at the mouth. It bruises Him and barely leaves Him.
40	And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.	I begged Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not."
41	And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.	Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with You and bear with You? Bring Your son here."
42	And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. 44	Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.	"Let these words sink into Your ears: the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men."
45	But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.	But they did not understand what He said. It was hidden from them so they could not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.
46	Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.	An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest.
47	And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,	Jesus, knowing the thought of their hearts, took a child and set Him by His side.
48	And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.	He said to them, "Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me. For the one who is least among you all is the one who is great."
49	And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.	John answered, "Master, we saw someone casting out devils in your name, and we stopped Him because He does not follow with us."
50	And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.	Jesus said to Him, "Do not stop Him, for the one who is not against us is for us."
51	And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,	When the time drew near for Him to be taken up, He set His face steadfastly to go to Jerusalem.
52	And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.	He sent messengers ahead of Him, and they went into a village of the Samaritans to prepare for Him.
53	And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.	But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.
54	And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?	When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven and consume them, as Elijah did?"
55	But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.	But He turned and rebuked them and said, "You do not know what spirit you are of.
56	For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.	For the Son of Man has not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." And they went to another village.
57	And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.	As they were going along the road, someone said to him, "Lord, I will follow you wherever You go."
58	And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.	Jesus said to Him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
59	And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.	He said to another, "Follow Me." But He said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
60	Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.	Jesus said to Him, "Let the dead bury their own dead. But You go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
61	And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.	Another said, "Lord, I will follow You, but let me first say farewell to those at my home."
62	And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.	Jesus said to Him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
