John 7

Jesus goes up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles and teaches in the temple, dividing the crowds over whether He is the Christ. On the last day of the feast He cries out, 'If any man thirst, let him come to Me and drink.' The Pharisees send officers to arrest Him, but they return empty-handed.

vKing James VersionModern English
After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. After this, Jesus traveled through Galilee. He would not go through Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. Now the Jews' Feast of Tabernacles was near.
His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. His brothers said to Him, "Leave here and go to Judea so Your disciples there can see the works You are doing.
For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. No one does things in secret when he wants to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world."
For neither did his brethren believe in him.For not even His brothers believed in Him.
Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but Your time is always ready.
The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. The world cannot hate You, but it hates Me because I testify that its works are evil.
Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast yet, because My time has not yet fully come."
When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee. After saying this, He stayed in Galilee.
But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He also went up — not openly, but in private.
Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?The Jews were looking for Him at the feast and said, "Where is He?"
And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. There was a lot of muttering about him among the crowd. Some said, "He is a good man." Others said, "No — He leads the people astray."
Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews. But no one spoke openly about him out of fear of the Jews.
Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.About the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.
And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? The Jews were amazed and said, "How does this man know so much, having never studied?"
Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not My own. It comes from Him who sent Me.
If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. If anyone chooses to do God's will, He will know whether this teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.Whoever speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory. But whoever seeks the glory of him who sent him — that man is true, and there is no falsehood in him.
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?Did Moses not give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill Me?"
The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? The crowd answered, "You have a devil! Who is trying to kill You?"
Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.Jesus answered them, "I did one work, and You are all amazed.
Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.Moses gave you circumcision — not that it came from Moses, but from the fathers — and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry at Me for making a man completely well on the Sabbath?
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.Do not judge by outward appearances. Judge with right judgment."
Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? Some of the people of Jerusalem said, "Is this not the man they are trying to kill?
But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? Here He is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to Him! Can it be that the rulers really know that this is the Christ?
Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.Yet we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."
Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. Then Jesus cried out in the temple as He taught, "You know Me, and You know where I am from. But I have not come on My own. He who sent Me is true, and him you do not know.
But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me."
Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. Then they tried to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?Yet many in the crowd believed in Him. They said, "When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than this man has done?"
The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him. The chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest Him.
Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.Jesus said, "I am with You only a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me.
Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. You will look for Me but will not find Me. Where I am, You cannot come."
Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? The Jews said to one another, "Where does He intend to go that we cannot find Him? Will He go to those scattered among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come? What does He mean when He says, 'You will look for Me but will not find Me,' and 'Where I am, You cannot come'?"
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of His belly will flow rivers of living water."
(But this spake he of the Spirit, for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)He said this about the Spirit, for the Holy Ghost had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. When the people heard these words, some of them said, "This really is the Prophet."
Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?Others said, "This is the Christ." But others said, "Will the Christ come from Galilee?
Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?Does the Scripture not say that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"
So there was a division among the people because of him.So there was a division among the people over him.
And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. Some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on him.
Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?The officers went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did You not bring Him?"
The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.The officers answered, "No one ever spoke like this man!"
Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? The Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived?
Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in Him?
But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. But this crowd, who do not know the law — they are accursed."
Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)Nicodemus — the one who had come to Jesus before, and who was one of them — said to them,
Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?"Does our law judge a man without first hearing from him and finding out what He is doing?"
They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. They answered Him, "Are You from Galilee too? Look it up — no prophet arises from Galilee."
And every man went unto his own house. Then everyone went to His own house.
