John 4

Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, revealing that He is the Messiah and offering her living water. Many Samaritans believe because of His words. He then heals a nobleman's son in Capernaum from a distance, His second sign.

5	Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.	So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
6	Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.	Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from the journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7	There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.	A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."
8	(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)	His disciples had gone into the city to buy food.
9	Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.	The Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
10	Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.	Jesus answered her, "If You knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to You, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given You living water."
11	The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?	The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do You get that living water?
12	Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?	Are You greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock."
13	Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:	Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again.
14	But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.	But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give Him will become in Him a spring of water welling up to everlasting life."
15	The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.	The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water."
16	Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.	Jesus said to her, "Go, call Your husband, and come back here."
17	The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:	The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband.'
18	For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.	You have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth."
19	The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.	The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet.
20	Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.	Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews say that Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship."
21	Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.	Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when You will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22	Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.	You worship what You do not know. We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23	But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.	But the hour is coming — and is now here — when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is seeking such people to worship Him.
24	God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.	God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth."
25	The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.	The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things."
26	Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.	Jesus said to her, "I who speak to You am He."
27	And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?	Just then His disciples came back. They were surprised that He was talking with a woman, but no one said, "What are you seeking?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
28	The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,	The woman left her water jar and went back into the city. She said to the people,
29	Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?	"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
30	Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.	They left the city and came to Him.
31	In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.	Meanwhile, His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat something."
32	But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.	But He said to them, "I have food to eat that You do not know about."
33	Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?	So the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought him something to eat?"
34	Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.	Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
35	Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.	Do You not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell You — lift up Your eyes and see that the fields are already white for harvest.
36	And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.	The reaper is already receiving His wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper may rejoice together.
37	And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.	For in this the saying holds true: 'One sows and another reaps.'
38	I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.	I sent You to reap what You did not work for. Others have worked, and You have entered into their labor."
39	And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.	Many Samaritans from that city believed in Him because of the woman's testimony: "He told me everything I ever did."
40	So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.	So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them. He stayed there two days.
41	And many more believed because of his own word;	Many more believed because of His own word.
42	And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.	They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what You said. We have heard Him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world."
43	Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.	After the two days He departed from there for Galilee.
44	For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.	For Jesus Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in His own hometown.
45	Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.	When He arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed Him, having seen all the things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast — for they had also gone to the feast.
46	So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.	Jesus came again to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. There was a royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum.
47	When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.	When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee, He went to Him and begged Him to come down and heal His son, who was close to death.
48	Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.	Jesus said to Him, "Unless You see signs and wonders, You will not believe."
49	The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.	The official said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
50	Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.	Jesus said to Him, "Go. Your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus had spoken to Him and went on His way.
51	And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.	As He was on His way down, His servants met him and told him, "Your son is alive."
52	Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.	He asked them the hour when He had begun to recover. They said to Him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left Him."
53	So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.	The father knew it was the same hour when Jesus had said to Him, "Your son will live." He Himself believed, and His whole household.
54	This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.	This was the second sign Jesus did after coming from Judaea into Galilee.
