John 11

Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb, weeping at the grave before commanding, 'Lazarus, come forth.' Many Jews believe in Him because of this sign. The chief priests and Pharisees, alarmed by the growing crowds, plot to put Jesus to death, and Caiaphas prophesies that Jesus would die for the nation.

vKing James VersionModern English
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Now a certain man was sick — Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)This was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped His feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.So His sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, "Lord, the one You love is sick."
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. When Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness is not unto death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.So when He heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where He was.
Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. After that He said to His disciples, "Let us go to Judaea again."
His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? The disciples said to Him, "Master, the Jews were just trying to stone You, and You are going back there?"
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because He sees the light of this world.
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in Him."
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. After saying this, He told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. But I am going to wake him."
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. His disciples said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.Jesus had spoken of His death, but they thought He was talking about actual sleep.
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.So Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead.
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.I am glad for Your sake that I was not there — so that You may believe. But let us go to Him."
Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.Thomas, called Didymus, said to the other disciples, "Let us also go, so that we may die with Him."
Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them over the death of their brother.
Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. But Mary stayed seated in the house.
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You."
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do You believe this?"
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. She said to Him, "Yes, Lord. I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, Who was to come into the world."
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary quietly, saying, "The Master is here and is calling for you."
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.Jesus had not yet entered the village — He was still in the place where Martha had met him.
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. The Jews who were with Mary in the house comforting her saw her get up quickly and go out. They followed her, thinking she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet, saying, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died."
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.He asked, "Where have You laid Him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see."
Jesus wept.Jesus wept.
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! Then the Jews said, "See how He loved Him!"
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have kept this man from dying?"
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a bad odor — He has been dead four days."
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell You that if You believe, You will see the glory of God?"
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.So they took away the stone. Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.I knew that You always hear Me. But I said this for the sake of the people standing here, so that they may believe that You sent Me."
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. When He had said this, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.The man who had been dead came out, his hands and feet wrapped in burial cloths, and His face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unwrap Him and let Him go."
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. Many of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed in Him.
But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a council meeting and said, "What are we doing? This man is performing many signs.
If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him. Then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation."
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all.
Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.You do not understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people than that the whole nation should perish."
And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; He did not say this of His own accord. Being high priest that year, He prophesied that Jesus would die for that nation.
And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Not for that nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God Who were scattered abroad.
Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. So from that day on they plotted to put Him to death.
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence into a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews. He went from there to a region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and He stayed there with His disciples.
And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. The Jewish Passover was near. Many people went up to Jerusalem from the countryside before the Passover to purify themselves.
Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do You think? Will He not come to the feast?"
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where Jesus was, He should report it so they might arrest Him.
