Isaiah 57

The righteous perish and no one takes it to heart. The LORD rebukes the idolaters who sacrifice children in the valleys and set up their bed on every high mountain. But to the contrite and humble spirit the LORD gives life, for He will not contend forever. He creates the fruit of the lips -- peace to him who is far off and to him who is near. There is no peace for the wicked.

vKing James VersionModern English
The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. The righteous man perishes, and no one takes it to heart. Godly men are taken away, with no one realizing that the righteous man is taken away from the evil that is coming.
He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness. He enters into peace. They rest in their places — each one who walked in his uprightness.
But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. But come here, you children of a sorceress — you offspring of the adulterer and the prostitute.
Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,Who are you mocking? Against whom do you open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, offspring of deceit?
Inflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, burning your children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks? You burn with lust among the oaks and under every green tree. You sacrifice your children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks.
Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these?Among the smooth stones of the stream is your portion; they are your lot. To them you have poured out drink offerings and have made grain offerings. Shall I relent for these things?
Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice. On a high and lofty mountain you made your bed. You went up there to offer your sacrifices.
Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance: for thou hast discovered thyself to another than me, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it.Behind the door and the doorpost you have put your symbol. Turning from Me, you uncovered yourself to another and went up. You enlarged your bed and made a bargain with them. You loved their bed; you chose their open company.
And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell. You journeyed to the king with oil and lavished your perfumes. You sent your ambassadors far away; you sent them down even to the grave.
Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way; yet saidst thou not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of thine hand; therefore thou wast not grieved. You were worn out by your many journeys, but you did not say, "It is hopeless." You found renewed strength, and so you were not discouraged.
And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast lied, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest me not?Whom have you feared and been in awe of, that you have lied and not remembered Me, not taken Me to heart? Was I not silent for a long time, and so you do not fear Me?
I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works; for they shall not profit thee.I will expose your so-called righteousness and your deeds — they will not help you.
When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain; When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you! But the wind will carry them all away; a breath will take them. But he who takes refuge in Me shall possess the land and shall inherit My holy mountain.
And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people. He shall say: "Build up, build up — prepare the way! Remove every stumbling block from the road for My people."
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For thus says the One who is high and lifted up — who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I live in the high and holy place, and also with the one who is contrite and humble in spirit — to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite."
For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry. For the spirit would grow faint before Me — the souls I have made.
For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart.Because of his iniquitous covetousness I was angry; I struck him and hid My face in anger. But he kept going back to the ways of his own heart.
I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.I have seen his ways, but I will heal him. I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners.
I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD; and I will heal him.I create the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace to the one who is far and to the one who is near, says the LORD. I will heal Him.
But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. But the wicked are like the troubled sea — it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mud and mire.
There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked."There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."
