Isaiah 47

The LORD pronounces judgment on the virgin daughter of Babylon, who will come down from her throne and sit in the dust. She trusted in her wickedness and said, 'No one sees me.' Disaster will come on her suddenly. Her astrologers and stargazers cannot save her from the fire that will consume her.

1	Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.	Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground, for there is no throne for You — daughter of the Chaldeans. You will no longer be called tender and delicate.
2	Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.	Take the millstones and grind flour. Remove Your veil; strip off Your skirt and bare Your leg; wade through the rivers.
3	Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.	Your nakedness will be exposed. Your shame will be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will spare no one.
4	As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.	Our Redeemer — the LORD of hosts is His name — is the Holy One of Israel.
5	Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.	Sit in silence. Go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans. For you will no longer be called mistress of kingdoms.
6	I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.	I was angry with My people. I profaned My inheritance and handed them over to You. But You showed them no mercy. You laid a heavy yoke even on the elderly.
7	And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.	You said, "I will be queen forever." You did not take these things to heart; You did not think about how it would end.
8	Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:	So now listen to this, You lover of pleasure, who live so carelessly and say in Your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me. I will never be a widow; I will never lose my children."
9	But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.	Both of these shall come on You in a single day — the loss of children and widowhood. They shall come in full measure, despite Your many sorceries and the great power of Your spells.
10	For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.	You felt secure in Your wickedness and said, "No one sees me." Your wisdom and your knowledge led You astray. You said in Your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me."
11	Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.	So disaster shall come upon You, and You will not know how to charm it away. Calamity shall fall on You, and You will not be able to ward it off. Ruin shall come on You suddenly, before You know it.
12	Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.	Keep on with Your spells and Your many sorceries, at which You have labored since Your youth. Perhaps You will succeed; perhaps You will strike fear into enemies.
13	Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.	You are worn out with all Your advisers. Let them stand up now — those who gaze at the stars, who study the sky each month and predict what will happen to You. Let them save You from what is coming.
14	Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.	They are like stubble. Fire will burn them up. They cannot save themselves from the power of the flame. This is no fire to warm Yourself at — no coals to sit beside.
15	Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.	So too will Your traders be — those You have worked with since Your youth. They will wander off, each going His own way. None of them will save You.
