Genesis 4

Cain and Abel brought offerings to the LORD; God accepted Abel's but rejected Cain's, and Cain killed his brother in the field. God cursed Cain to be a wanderer and marked him for protection, and Cain settled in the land of Nod. Adam and Eve had another son, Seth, and through his line men began to call on the name of the LORD.

1	And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.	Adam was intimate with his wife Eve. She conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, 'I have gotten a man from the LORD.'
2	And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.	Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
3	And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.	In the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
4	And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:	Abel also brought an offering—the firstborn of his flock and their fat. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5	But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.	But on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry. His face fell.
6	And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?	Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?
7	If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.	If You do well, will You not be accepted? But if You do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; its desire is for You, but You must rule over it.'
8	And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.	Cain spoke to his brother Abel, and while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
9	And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?	Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' He said, 'I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?'
10	And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.	The LORD said, 'What have You done? The voice of Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
11	And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;	Now You are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive Your brother's blood from Your hand.
12	When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.	When You work the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to You. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.'
13	And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.	Cain said to the LORD, 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14	Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.	You have driven me out today from the face of the ground. I shall be hidden from Your face. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.'
15	And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.	The LORD said to Him, 'Therefore whoever kills Cain, he shall suffer vengeance sevenfold.' And the LORD put a mark on Cain, so that anyone who found him would not kill him.
16	And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.	Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17	And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.	Cain was intimate with his wife. She conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it Enoch, after his son.
18	And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.	To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad begat Mehujael, and Mehujael begat Methusael, and Methusael begat Lamech.
19	And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.	Lamech took two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.
20	And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.	Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
21	And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.	His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
22	And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.	Zillah also gave birth to Tubal-cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah.
23	And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.	Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
24	If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.	If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.'
25	And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.	Adam was intimate with his wife again. She gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, 'God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.'
26	And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.	To Seth also a son was born. He named Him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.
