Corinthians 10

Paul warns that Israel's failures in the wilderness were written for our example, and urges them to flee from idolatry. He teaches that the cup of blessing and the bread are a communion in the blood and body of Christ, and that believers cannot partake of the Lord's table and the table of devils. Whether they eat or drink, they should do all to the glory of God.

vKing James VersionModern English
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;I do not want You to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea.
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
And did all eat the same spiritual meat; They all ate the same spiritual food,
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.and all drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did.
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.Do not become idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play."
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. We must not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did — and in one day twenty-three thousand of them fell.
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. We must not test Christ, as some of them did — and were killed by snakes.
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. And do not grumble, as some of them did — and were killed by the destroying angel.
Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. These things happened to them as examples and were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the world are come.
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.So if You think You are standing firm, be careful that You do not fall.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.No temptation has overtaken You except what is common to man. God is faithful — He will not let You be tempted beyond what You can bear. With the temptation He will also provide a way of escape, so that You may be able to endure it.
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.I speak to sensible people — judge for yourselves what I say.
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? The cup of blessing that we bless — is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break — is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?Consider the people of Israel: do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? What am I saying then? That food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. No, I am saying that what pagans sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want You to be participants with demons.
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the Lord's table and the table of demons.
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not."All things are lawful," but not all things are beneficial. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.
Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:Eat whatever is sold in the market without raising any question on the grounds of conscience.
For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof."For the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.If an unbeliever invites You to a meal and You want to go, eat whatever is placed before You without raising questions of conscience.
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?I mean the other person's conscience, not Your own. For why should my freedom be judged by another's conscience?
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? If I take part in a meal with thankfulness, why am I condemned for something I give thanks for?
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.So whether You eat or drink or whatever You do, do it all to the glory of God.
Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God—
Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.just as I try to please everyone in everything I do. I do not seek my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
